Why “just works” matters more than “has every feature.”
Unpopular opinion: most Shopify apps solve simple problems in the most complicated way possible.
You want to show a trust badge. Somehow that requires editing theme code, a 20-minute setup video, and a support ticket when it breaks after your next theme update.
You want customers to see a product in 3D. Somehow that means a custom integration, a developer, and a six-week timeline.
Merchants don’t want more settings. They want the problem solved — fast, without touching code, without babysitting the app every time they update their theme.
That’s the actual bar. Not “does this app have every feature imaginable.” It’s “can a merchant install this, set it up in a few clicks, and never think about it again.”
Every app we’ve built at Octilo has been held to that bar. If it takes more than a few clicks or requires touching theme files, we’ve failed the merchant, no matter how many features are on the list.
Simple isn’t the absence of capability. It’s capability without the tax.
Question for other Shopify developers/agencies here:
What’s the most “simple thing made complicated” pattern you’ve seen in an app?
